Renting a Car in Hvar: Everything You Need to Know Before You Hit the Road

Hvar, one of Croatia’s most stunning islands, is a favorite destination for travelers seeking crystal-clear beaches, rich history, and vibrant nightlife. Renting a car is a great way to explore the island at your own pace, but before you do, it’s essential to understand the terms and conditions to avoid unexpected issues.

Key Rental Requirements and Policies

1. Age Requirements

Most rental companies in Hvar require drivers to be at least 18 years old, though some may have a minimum age of 21 or even 23 for certain vehicle categories.

2. Driver’s License & IDP

A valid driver’s license from your home country is required. If your license is not in English or Latin script, you might need an International Driving Permit (IDP) to rent a vehicle in Croatia.

3. Insurance Coverage

Basic insurance is usually included in the rental price, but this may not cover all potential damages or liabilities. Additional coverage is worth considering to avoid high costs in case of an accident.

4. Payment & Security Deposit

Most car rental agencies require a credit card for payment and will place a security deposit hold on it, which is refunded after the vehicle is returned in good condition.

5. Fuel Policy

Common policies include:

  • Full-to-Full: You receive the car with a full tank and must return it the same way.
  • Same-to-Same: The fuel level at pickup should match the level at return.
Failure to comply may result in additional refueling charges.

6. Rental Duration & Late Returns

The rental period is usually measured in 24-hour blocks, and returning the car late could result in extra charges. Always confirm the exact return time with your rental provider.

7. Additional Drivers

If more than one person will be driving, the extra driver must be registered in the rental contract, and there may be an additional fee for this.

8. Driving Restrictions

Some rental agreements prohibit:

  • Off-road driving
  • Traveling to other countries without prior authorization
Breaking these rules could void your insurance coverage.

9. Cleanliness & Smoking Policies

Rental cars should be returned in clean condition. Extra cleaning fees may apply if the vehicle is excessively dirty, especially with sand, mud, or food debris. Smoking is strictly prohibited, and penalties may apply if any traces are found.

Final Thoughts

Renting a car in Hvar is an excellent way to explore the island freely, but understanding the rental terms and policies beforehand will save you from unexpected surprises. Make sure to review the agreement carefully so you can enjoy your trip without hassle!

The fuel policy is full-to-full, which means you start with a full tank of fuel and refill it before returning the vehicle. You have the option to pay a per-kilometer fee, and we retain the discretion to set the fuel costs.

Can I return the vehicle at a different location?

When selecting a drop-off location, you have the options of our main office at the bus station or Pharos Hotel. Please specify your choice in advance to allow us to prepare. If you are staying near Pharos Hotel, consider it for convenience. The bus station is about 500 meters from the harbor and may be more suitable if you are heading that way.

Are there age restrictions for renting vehicles?

Drivers of any age can rent vehicles with a valid license for the vehicle type. However, for drivers under 21, the deposit amount increases based on the vehicle and rental agency's terms.

Do I need a credit card to rent a vehicle?

A credit card is required to rent a vehicle with us. A preauthorization hold will be placed on the card for the duration of the rental and released upon its completion.

We accept all major credit cards, including Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Diners.

Please note: We do not accept prepaid cards, Electron cards, travel cards, Visa Electron, or Maestro.
